"Literacy Connections" is the theme for the upcoming Laubach Literacy Action Biennial Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida on June 8-10, 2000 with a pre-conference scheduled on June 7-8. West Virginia Laubach Literacy invites you to:

*Meet the country's top literacy professionals!
*Hear the latest in literacy research, trends, and issues!
*Learn the newest techniques in training and tutoring!
*Share ideas with your peers from every state in the nation!
*Meet students and be inspired by their compelling stories!

New readers and volunteer literacy providers throughout West Virginia will be celebrating the 22nd anniversary of Laubach Literacy assistance on the grassroots level in the State as well as the 12th anniversary of West Virginia Laubach Literacy's(WVLL) State Office. WVLL, a non-profit organization affiliated nationally with Laubach Literacy Action the largest and oldest volunteer literacy provider in the country, provides a variety of learner-centered programs throughout the State.

The next meeting of WVLL will be the Board Retreat on March 24 & 25, 2000 at Cedar Lakes, Ripley, WV. Contact Marilyn McCord, WVLL Treasurer, for more information at (304)-797-1016. A variety of workshops will be available for new readers, volunteer tutors, board members, literacy program managers and ABE instructors.

The Laubach Literacy Councils and Programs throughout the State have been networking for 22 years; but, 5 years ago the Regional Technical Assistant's Network was formally put into place to better assist the grassroots literacy providers. Anyone interested in receiving technical assistance for their program or information on initiating a new literacy program in their area can contact our Regional Technical Assistants or the WV Laubach Literacy State Office.

In response to the need for training, the Regional Technical Assistants(RTA's) in coordination with our Network of Instructional Technical Assistants(NITA's), the following regional trainings have been chosen:

  • Training By Design(volunteer tutor training)
  • English as a Second Language
  • Math: What Works
  • Successful Learning Skills
  • Test Taking Skills
  • The Challenger Series
